Chapter Nine
âHe has been dead at least for the last twenty-four hours,â Robin said, kneeling near the dead body. She wasnât a coroner, and her knowledge of such things was pretty basic, but at the moment, she was all they had. Robin looked at the vacant eyes staring at the starry sky above, the body once again without any sign of injury or obvious cause of death. He was spread eagle, a pentagram drawn under him with blood. Robin had seen all of this before. Bane Murphy had been found this way.
âHe was killed somewhere else,â Robin said. âDue to the obvious lack of blood. There is a good chance that the pentagram was drawn in his own blood just like Bane Murphyâs was. This seems to be the same situation, but without the forensic team here, I canât deduce much.â
She turned to look at John, who was staring down at her with a grim look on his face. His arms were crossed across his chest.
âYou should call the police,â Robin said. âThis is getting serious.â
âNo,â John said. âIf the police come, they will disband all of us. Everyone here will be under suspicion. I canât do that to my people. The police are out of the question.â
Robin stood up, something inside her snaps, and she marched toward John before grabbing him by the collar and pulling him closer.
âRight now,â she said through gritted teeth. âI have a very good reason to believe that you are the killer. You murdered this man, and your reluctance to involve the police confirms my suspicion. Now, the way I see it, I start questioning your alibi and do a thorough investigation of your tent. I should tell everyone exactly who I am and what is going on here. The people who follow you blindly should know that their Savior is picking them off one by one and killing them in some sort of satanic ritual.â
John looked back at her with a calm face and softly said, âDo you really believe that?â
To be honest, Robin didnât believe it as strongly as she did before. It didnât make any sense for John to kill one of his own people and then stage the victim for the entire cult to see. Especially considering how determined he is for them not to find out the truth. This just weakened his own position and made it seem like John was strong enough to protect them all. Not only that, he specifically requested that Robin investigate the case and find out whatever she could. While going to the bathroom, the woman who had found the dead body had been taken in by the Elders, who were apparently giving her some calming medicine. Robin would bet both her kidneys that they were giving her the drugs to make her forget what she saw.
When the cry had rung out, John had been the first one out, and he had instantly announced to his people that the girl had seen a dead animal and confused it with a human in the darkness.
